Irna, The two newly freed Iranian
documentary filmmakers upon arriving Iran through Shalamcheh border,
attributed their freedom after 127 days under US custody to "the
nation`s prayers."
Soheil Karimi in an interview with IRNA at the pavilion of
Abadan`s International Airport, while appreciating the deep concern
expressed by the nation throughout their detention, expressed hope
that they will be able to make up for that much kindness.
He added, "The Americans realized they had made a grave mistake
during the first hours after arresting us, but did not care enough
to make up for that mistake."
He added, "We even asked permission from a US officer at a check
and inspection station near Baghdad for taking a few minutes of film
from their position and he had no objection to the proposal, but
when we were doing so another group of US military forces arrived at
the scene and stopped the process of film taking."
Karimi said, "At the beginning we were sure the Americans would
release us in a short while. We even showed them our valid
identification cards, as well as our permits to enter Iraq`s soil,
but they continued keeping us in custody under phony pretexts"
The freed documentary filmmaker reiterated, "We were initially
transferred to Baghdad Prison, from where we were transferred to
Diwaniyah Prison, and finally to Um Qars Prison near Basra that was
controlled by the British forces, and this meant 127 days in
custody."
He added, "The first 10 days in detention passed quite tough, and
the strange thing is that the Americans found nothing at all against
us throughout the past four months, and kept repeating `we made a
mistake`".
Expressing delight over being back in Iran and among his family
members, and the warm blooded Iranian nation, Karimi thanked the
diplomatic stature of the country, as well as the Iranian mass media
for the strong role they played throughout their days in custody.
Saeid Abu-Taleb, the other released IRIB documentary filmmaker,
too, said, "The Americans are truly caught in Iraq quagmire and sink
deeper with the passage of each new day."
Elaborating on the type of his arrest, Abu-Taleb said, "We were
taking films from a US check point upon asking permission from the
officer in charge, having all authentic papers, but faced resistance
on the part of other US forces, and were eventually arrested."
He said, "The Americans found no documents against us and even
their numerous interrogations, which went along with various types of
torture led them nowhere."
Abu-Taleb, too, thanked all Iranian bodies, including the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Islamic Republic of Iran
Broadcasting (IRIB), the press, and particularly the warm blooded
Iranian nation for the efforts spent aimed at their freedom from US
and British custody.
The two freed documentary filmmakers left Abadan Airport for
Tehran at 21:50 and were seen off by the Abadan governor general,
IRIB officials, press reporters, and a large number of Abadani
citizens.
Abu-Taleb and Karimi arrived at Tehran`s International Mehrabad
Airport around midnight, where the large crowd of Tehrani citizens
and country`s officials were waiting to welcome them.
